Llullaillaco Ascent

Situated in the heart of the Atacama dessert, the Llullaillaco Mountain stands at 6739 meters, just 220 meters less than the summit of Aconcagua. This peak accounts for the highest Inca’s alter ever found. Argentinean archeologists with the aid of the National Geographic Society worked during several months in 1999 to retrieve the mummified remains of two young Inca children. This expedition will take you to the highest plateau in America, a very desolate landscape where colours have endless variations.
The ascent may be attempted from April to May and from October through to November.
The climb is suitable for the novice and experienced trekker who wish to achieve experience in high altitude in a very remote setting, with no external support in a true expedition style. We will have the support of a 4 wheel drive vehicle in order to reach the base of the volcano. Above our Base camp, participants will have to carry their own loads. We recommend individuals to have a good level of physical fitness.
Day 1.
Arrival in Salta, pick up permits in the Dirección de Patrimonio Cultural de Salta, gear check and last minute detail adjustments. Lodge in San Lorenzo in Salta.
Day 2. From Salta we will drive through the Lerma Valley and into the Quebrada del Toro, reaching an altitude of approximately 3200m. Accommodation at San Antonio de los Cubres hut.
Day 3.
Trekking to San Geronimo (5000 m.) and back to Tuzgle volcano basecamp. Camping.
Day 4.
Ascent to Tusgle volcano at 5560m or resting day, depending on conditions and how the group is doing. Accommodation at San Antonio de los Cubres hut.
Day 5. Drive through the incredible dry salt lakes to Tolar Grande. Camping.
Day 6.
Drive from Tolar Grande to almost the base camp. Short hike to reach the base camp of Llullaillaco. Camping.
Day 7. Ascent to camp 1, at the base of a frozen lake, at 5800m. Camping.
Day 8.
Ascent to the high camp at 6200m. Camping.
Day 9. Attempt to the summit, reaching 6739m and back to
camp 1. Camping.
Day 10. Descent from camp 1, with all belongings and trash, to base camp and drive back to Tolar Grande.
Day 11. Return drive back to enjoy the greenery of the valley, the taste of Argentinean meat and some excellent red wine. Accommodation in San Lorenzo, Salta Hotel.
Day 12. Day in reserve in case of bad weather or logistical matters.
